NCGUB Calls for Action Worldwide
to Support NLD's 'Reconciliation' Offer

The National League for Democracy has taken flexibility to the next level when it announced that it is willing to extend de jure recognition to the current military regime if the Burmese generals agree to convene the Parliament in accordance with the results of the 1990 elections.

The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB) warmly welcomes that the latest gesture for national reconciliation by the National League for Democracy since it is an offer of mutual recognition -- the military regime honoring the results of the 1990 elections and the election-winning parties recognizing the role of the military in national politics.

The National League for Democracy's peace offer at its annual Union Day celebrations in Rangoon on 12 February said the term of that "transitional government" should be negotiated between the two sides, that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi be included in all negotiations, and that a leading personage from ASEAN be named as a facilitator should one be needed for the negotiations.  The National League for Democracy has said it will wait for a response from the regime until 17 April -- Burmese New Year Day.

The NCGUB urges the Burmese military leadership to take up the offer for national reconciliation so that it can become partners in the all-out national efforts to resolve the prevailing socioeconomic and political crises which are proving to be beyond the capability of any single party, particularly the military.

The NCGUB appeals to ASEAN nations and neighboring countries to persuade the Burmese generals into accepting the national reconciliation offer and the international community at large to make a concerted endeavor through the mechanisms of the United Nations Security Council to bring peace and national reconciliation in Burma.

The NCGUB calls on the people of Burma and the Burmese communities overseas to undertake activities that express support for the national reconciliation offer by the National League for Democracy.
