Peace Gathering in Kuala Lumpur Successfully Ended

Kuala Lumpur, 26th March: National League for Democracy (NLD) has offered a peace and national reconciliation plan to SPDC generals on 12th February, 2006 to end the country’s political crisis. The NLD leaders also have requested generals to respond its proposal no later than April 17, 2006. Burmese living overseas have spoken out to support NLD’s call for peace soon after National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB) calls for peace campaigns and actions worldwide.
 
To support NLD’s call for peace in Burma, the National League for Democracy (Youth) Liberated Area, Malaysia Branch and a regional NGO, Tenaganita held a peace gathering at Chinese Assembly Hall, China Town in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today.

At 10:30 am Malay time, the opening ceremony started with lighting peace candles by two Burmese girls. After that, Nobel Peace prize nominated Tenaganita director Dr.
Irene Fernandaz, who sponsored and organized the event along with NLD Youth (LA) Malaysia Branch, delivered a key note address to the attendees. She talked about her experiences on the situation of stateless Burmese people living in Malaysia. She believed that Burma, also ASEAN member, must change towards peace and democracy in near future.

The next honorable speaker was Malaysian Parliament member Ms. Teresa Kok. She delivered the message from Parliamentary Opposition Leader Mr. Lim Kit Siang. In his message, Lim said he always supports Burmese struggle for peace and democracy and salute the courageous sons and daughters of Burma who had overcome unimaginable hardships, sufferings and sacrifices in past 16 years to keep alive the aspirations democracy and national reconciliation.

He also call on ASEAN governments, parliamentarians and civil societies to extend the fullest supports to the cause of restoration of democracy and attainment of national reconciliation in Burma. Teresa criticized ASEAN envoy and Malaysian Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar mission to Burma. They had met top SPDC generals about twenty minutes discussing Burma's several decades long problem.

U Hla Oo, one of the elected Parliament Members in 1990 elections in Burma, delivered in a speech. He pointed out that Burma will be change not only by NLD and SPDC, its time to change by the people of Burma. He also encouraged Burmese people to support NLD’s call for peace and reconciliation. Ms.Galorene Daz, Tenaganita,  read a poem “The Long Road To Freedom” dedicated to Burmese who have suffered for a long decades under the tyrants.

 The regional human rights society, SUARAM representative Ms. Seah Li Ling also delivered a statement to support Burma's struggle for freedom. Participants also had watched a documentary video about Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma.

Afternoon, represents of NLD (Youth) Liberated Area, Malaysia Branch and
Tenaganita, read a Joint Statement both Burmese and Malay languages.U Maung Hla from NLD(Youth), LA(Malaysia) presented T-shirts and posters as a gift to the guests.
The peace gathering event ended with singing Paul McCartney’s song “Freedom” and freeing 9 doves that dedicated to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and to the people of Burma. Nearly two hundred Burmese and Malaysian nationals attended today campaign.
