Prime Minister Dr. Sein Win's Speech at Peace Rally in New York

New York, March 31, 2006: My dear fellow Burmese, Today is a very special day for peace in Burma, as we gather here to show our solidarity with the National League for Democracy (NLD) in their call for the process of national reconciliation in Burma. As you know, the National League for Democracy (NLD) has taken flexibility to the next level when it announced that it is willing to extend de jure recognition to the State Peace and Development Council as a "transitional government," the term of which is to be negotiated between the two sides, if the SPDC agrees to convene the Parliament in accordance with the results of the 1990 elections. An appeal to the fraternal people of all nationalities of Burma now living overseas

Dear people of all nationalities of Burma,

The National League for Democracy (NLD) has issued a Special Announcement for national reconciliation and peace on 12 February which is an historic and auspicious day for all of us. In the announcement, the NLD has called on the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) to convene the Parliament in accordance with the results of the 1990 general elections. It says that that Parliament will extend de jure recognition to the SPDC as a transitional government, the term of which will be negotiated between the two sides.

The announcement also demanded that as the first phase of the national reconciliation and peace process, the SPDC should immediately and unconditionally release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo, U Khun Tun Oo, and all other political prisoners. Only then, it added, that a conference on political dialogue for national reconciliation, which is urgently needed in the country, can be held immediately. [More]
